How to Play 2048

Every move, all tiles slide in one direction and any two equal numbers that collide merge into their sum. A new tile (2 or 4) spawns on each move. You win the moment a 2048 tile is born — and you can keep playing past it for a higher score. The board fills up with every move; when no tile can slide or merge, the game is over.

  • Move: arrow keys (or W A S D); on touch screens, swipe
  • Merge rule: 2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 4 = 8 … each tile merges at most once per move
  • Score: every merge adds the new tile's value to your score

Tips & Strategy

  • Claim a corner. Keep your biggest tile locked in one corner the whole game and build a descending chain toward it. Never let a small tile pin it in the middle.
  • Pick three directions, not four. If your big tile lives bottom-left, move mostly left, down, and only right when you must — the fourth direction (up) is what breaks runs.
  • Build in a snake. Arrange tiles so values descend along a path that folds back on itself: 512, 256, 128, 64… then merging cascades up the chain in one move.
  • Don't chase merges. A merge that scatters your chain costs more than it scores. If a move only helps one small tile, look for a better one first.
